    Man flees absolutes but without them, there are no sure foundations.

    Markets fluctuate, but are stable when based on sound money, but men will not accept another man’s definition of money. That’s why God made silver and gold and declared them money, and called them “good” in that they are purposeful to mankind. He also states that he hates unjust weights and measures and drove out the money changers and is against “usury”.

    I too appreciate LOTR, and surely you understand the truths presented their flow from Tolkien’s Abrahamic world view, no?

    Abraham paid 400 shekels of silver for the land holding the tomb where he buried his wife at a price “current” with the merchants. Long time ago. Principles remain the same. Prices can change like a current, but the weights and the elements don’t change.

    At age 16, I formed a distinct memory of Nixon on TV that evening because it was one of those early moments when we Americans got a clue that the world wasn’t going to revolve around us forever. And while it was no mystery to me then why gold redeemability might be relevant, it was one of the early proofs that government was the primary opponent of the laize faire economy.
    In the pile of opinion this anniversary brought forth was one surprise: is it true that foreign counterfeiting of FRNs had become a major problem? I do recall plenty of media attention to such issues in that time frame, but I have few facts to check this (it was offered as a defense of Nixon’s move: we were being robbed!)…
